As promised I’m back to share my pedestal table score from Craigslist and the inspiration behind it that had me looking daily!
A few months ago I stumbled upon this vintage dining table on 1stdibs and instantly fell in love with it! And then I saw the price which was over $3500! There was something about the shape and the rustic quality that I was drawn to… Restoration Hardware sells a similar one but with a different base and World Market has a very affordable version but I am not a fan of their wood finish.
Almost every retailer has a version of this table. The Hughes table above ran somewhere around $1300, so much better than Restoration Hardware but still to much for my budget. I like to switch up the look of my dining room every 3 or 4 years so my new table had to be affordable. I started looking on Craigslist (the first place I head to when looking for furniture) and after a few weeks of looking daily I found this!
It came with 6 chairs and the seller wanted $70 for the set but I offered him $50 for just the table and he agreed to it!
Not pretty I know… But I knew if I was willing to do some work, I could have the table I wanted for under $75. The finish was a mess… A dark oily dark stain from the 1960’s when Spanish Colonial was all the rage!
It’s been years since I’ve stripped a piece of furniture but I knew this table could not be painted so I ran to Home Depot and picked up this gel stripper that worked great! It goes on so easy and there is no smell!
After I stripped off the first coat I pulled out my hand sander and started sanding away. It took me exactly 14 hours to sand this table! Yep, 3 weekends and I was rewarded with a sore arm and back!
But look at it! Worth every minute!
I had this image saved on my computer and I couldn’t believe how my Craigslist find was nearly identical to this one?
I’m not sure if I should stain in in a light gray or maybe just wax it? Or maybe even polyurethane it in a satin finish…What are your thoughts?
